The Screwtape Letters as War Literature? PDF Print E-mail

Begun on the second Sunday after the commencement of the Battle of Britain, the spiritual classic The Screwtape Letters explores inner spiritual battles from a decidedly adversarial perspective. On Tuesday, May 4th, the Arizona C.S. Lewis Society will begin its extended discussion of The Screwtape Letters.  This monthly book study meets at 7:30 PM at Quo Vadis Books, 1037 E Lemon Street, Tempe, AZ, (480) 968-3663.

Sørina Higgins has just been appointed the new Book Review Editor for Sehnsucht: The C.S. Lewis Journal. Sørina Higgins (M.A., Middlebury College) is a writer living in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, and teaching at The Master’s Academy of Fine Arts. Her debut poetry chapbook, The Significance of Swans (Finishing Line Press), was nominated for a Conference on Christianity and Literature 2008 book-of-the-year award. Her writing has appeared in Radix, The Mythic Circle, Stillpoint, Relief, Innisfree, Studio, Perspectives, Alive Now, Windhover, Bible & Spade, idiom, and Sehnsucht. She is the author of the entry on Charles Williams in the Encyclopedia of Christian Literature and is cowriter of a blog on the arts and faith, http://iambicadmonit.blogspot.com.

Speaking of C.S. Lewis and the Bible, Lewis wrote the introduction to Letters to Young Churches: A Translation of the New Testament Epistles by J.B. Phillips (1947). The essay was reprinted in God in the Dock as “Modern Translations of the Bible”.

One of the RAF Chaplains to have worked with C.S. Lewis in WWII was Canon Stuart Barton Baggage. His son Christopher Babbage now lives in Jerome, Arizona.

In October 2010, HarperCollins will release The C.S. Lewis Bible, pairing the NRSV translation with more than 600 selections from Lewis’ writings. The Bible translation Lewis himself fought to keep in print was Coverdale’s version of the Psalms, now easily available on the web.
